The Wigeons are back at Greenlake, they've been at Lake Washington for a little while, flocking away from shore, mixed in with other birds. Only figured it out from enlarging a photo I'd shot, and seeing them in the midst. Small numbers at Greenlake, and just the American Wigeons, no visitors. Lots of ruckous in the trees. A couple Stellar Jays were going nuts with scolding something, high up in a grove of Douglas Fir, some Northern Flickers flew out, and I also saw a squirrel, but couldn't figure out what the fuss was about. I was hoping for an owl. About a quarter mile further along I ran into a raccoon. Juvenile, I think, about ten feet up from the shoreline. It was looking to make a run for it, toward the highway, but being that the day was nice, and a holiday for a lot of people, there were crowds out and tons of dogs. The raccoon eventually did make a run for it, and scrambled up a Spruce, only to have a couple people let their dog harrass it from the base.
Not a lot of birds out. Some Canadian Geese were washing near the swimming docks, ducking under the water, then flapping their massive wings to shake it off. Then rising up to get up on the dock. I think I saw one miss and fall back in the water, it swam away, as if embarrassed, and tried (successfully) a little while later. In a tall tree overlooking the water, a bald eagle, mostly being left alone, was gone when I came past again.
Now the rains have returned. I'm probably not walking.
